First-of-all: Welcome back college football and it's good to be back, Mean Green Nation!
Secondly, this is quite well-written!
It's certainly more constructive than most of what comes out of that...other allegedly Mean Green forum.
Anyways, on to the topic at-hand:
This fan prefers not to think, at least immediately, of such conundrums being "either-or" scenarios, of boxing one's self into a false-dichotomy. For example, one need not "give up the wings" in order to have shade from a canopy/roof, nor should one think that making the stadium more shaded is mutually-exclusive from keeping it the same size, or expanding it.
IMHO, there is a compromise that can be architecturally built to satisfy both the pro-shade people and the "make it larger"/"keep the wings" crowd.
Going for some sort of....almost AI-generated "halo"-roof/canopy around the stadium, with, perhaps, a "donut-hole" above the majority of the field-of-play, IMHO, isn't the way to go here.
Going for curved, diagonal (perhaps electronically-posable/bendable) "sails", that would have the double-effect of making the stadium look like a pirate ship, and a giant eagle, allowing for the "wings" to be kept, could/would/should satisfy as many of the concerned parties as possible, IMHO.
Think of it like how voting works (not that it does, but, just humor a statist hypothetical as an attempt at an allegory): Party/individual 1 orders candidates in an election in the preference of Candidate/proposition B, Candidate/proposition A, Candidate/proposition C. Party/individual 2 orders said candidates as C, A, B.
Now, in this run-off scenario, no candidate/proposition secures a super/actual majority of votes at the number-one spot, because each Party/individual voted for someone or something completely different from one another as their number-one voting preference. It's actually advantageous that Candidate/proposition A gets two second-place votes, because it somewhat satisfies every Party/individual involved in the voting process.
Candidate/proposition B, in this scenario, is keeping both the wings and attempting to gather shade. Expansion shouldn't be given up on, because the GOAL here is to COMPETE with the blue-bloods, in the same FBS, without any "break-away" NFL "D-League-on-the-cheap", and, therefore, one should endeavor to look, and feel, and play and WIN like the big boys!
This Seinfeld-esque "shrinkage" scenario reeks of the "let the big boys go away and settle on mediocrity away from them" crowd's "learned-helplessness". This fan would rather go with the old saying about "trying and failing being better than those nondescript, shadowy, huddled masses that know neither victory nor defeat"! This fan would rather see UNT play at, and especially HOST, big boys, and lose in a nail-biter, than stay in the "kiddie-pool" and trounce FCS "creampuffs" any day of the week!
GMG!
EDIT:
Thoughts on this breaking Dallas Cowboys trade of LB MicahParsons to Green Bay, who they play on September 28th, one month from today, in-fact, in-exchange for a 2026 and 2027 first-round pick, and Green Bay's DT KennyClark? IMHO, it COULD be akin to the HerschelWalker trade that led to Dallas being able to draft EmmettSmith....and everyone knows how that turned out for them!
(Full-disclosure, this fan has never understood/liked the concept of the "Draft", NFL or military, as it's entirely for-show and involuntary. Like....what if someone, like this user, wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys and no one else, but the San Fransissies draft them instead? This user would just walk right out of the building. Would prefer like in "Invincible" with MarkWahlberg, whereby teams had city-wide open-tryouts for any couch potato to high school letterman to have an equal chance of making the team. Think of all the latent, unrealized talent out there in the stands that can do what some of these overhyped and overpaid druggies do! Lots of "broke geniuses" out there just waiting to be discovered!
What would be totally cool, and unique in college football, would be a way to get "sail-wings" to "flap" on-command, perhaps after touchdowns, to "fan" the fans, so-to-speak.
They could provide shade, an aesthetic gimmick relevant to the mascot/team/school, and intermittent wind gusts. Maybe also during half-time on hot days?

yeah I am not an architect so I don’t have HSOs around the “how” but I do want the “what”
