Tom Herman called North Texas a “good football team” and said that even though the Mean Green “probably didn’t play to his [Morris’] standards” it was a hell of a road win.
Parsing praise immediately after a game poses some challenges. You have to sift out the messages that are praising of his own team, and the thoughts that help the coach look better. Eric Morris being called a hell of a coach after beating you is something of self-preservation. Also, it could just be true.
“I saw the guy we recruited” Herman said this about Cam Fancher. On tape, the quarterback looked like a guy who didn’t have the game figured out. On game day, he looked like CJ Stroud. Herman said he was trusting his line, playing with confidence, and throwing the ball like he has in practice. “These are 19-21 year old young guys and I wish you could see the growth I do each day.” The unpredictability that comes from college-aged players is what makes college football fun. You can have world beaters one week, and some doofus-like decisions the next.
