Well I got killed my Memphis.
Fake football coach quote:
We just weren’t ready for their physicality on the day. That is on the staff and the players and everyone. We have to be ready to play. That starts on Monday.
The final: 10-38.
The funny thing is I played much better in my little “scouting” matchup. I knew there was a patch and was curious about it. I haven’t played the game since they patched it. Well I played online, and a guy quit. I didn’t notice anything crazy. So I played Memphis real quick and went up 17-0. Then I allowed a few touchdowns as I was trying some things out but I felt like the defense was solid. I mean, I had two pick-sixes.
So I felt comfortable in the game and started the real one. Then I got monstered.
I did manage a 50 yard field goal to start things.
It was a total collapse from then on. Sacks, drops, and I could not get that running back down. Also Jyaire Shorter scored on me. Double whammy.
Here is a video clip that encapsulates the kind of game it was:
The backups try a little toss, gets hit as he throws, and throws an interception. It was brutal.
I kind of wish I could have kept the exhibition game version. Oof.
My thinking is that I need to adapt to this quickly. I am souring on the default NT playbook. I tried a quick exhibition with the Air Raid offense — the default one — and I liked some of it — the air raid names! 6! 618! 95! — but I do like the running stuff in the NT book. I really need a better tight end and a Z receiver that can catch the ball in tough spots. I think the patch kind of weakened the pass protection (for me at least) and included more drops. I had so many. It was tough.
I normally would wrap things up here but I am angry and also the Tulane game at NT has a big recruiting weekend lined up, I must save face and I must win.
I immediately get a sack and force a punt on the first drive. I want revenge. I then throw a pick-six on a mesh call. I was about to be hit and tapped X instead of Square and I am furious. I run it with Ragsdale — who was hurt the majority of last game — and he gets 10 and fumbles. I pick it up. I throw another quick pass. My tight end drops it. Then I throw another quick play and my RB stumbles and I turn it over on downs.
This is an epic collapse.
Tulane quickly moves the ball and score on a quick goal line pass. I get the ball. I run it. I get about seven. I ready a throw and get sacked. I throw again and get sacked and fumble. This is ridiculous. My right and left guards are getting abused, y’all. No time to throw at all. They toss a little RPO pass into the end zone. It is now 21-0 Tulane.
I am hit as I throw and it is intercepted. Tulane throws a touchdown immediately. The game is cheating, bro. I throw it on third down to fake Ward. He drops it. I throw it again (frustration!) to Kautai. He drops it. I am incensed.
I do, finnnallly force a punt from Tulane. Then I drive for a touchdown.
I get in prevent mode and my linebacker grabs an interception. If only he
was a burner, as he was caught. I toss it into the endzone as time expires and it is picked off. I wonder if I should have tried the field goal.
I start the second half with the ball and promptly go 87 yards in 2 minutes for a score. I am down 14 and I can just barely smell a comeback. I dare not say it aloud. My kid cries and I go pick her up. Perhaps she will be lucky for me.
I force 2nd and 12. I call a cover 1 safety blitz. I have Hughes lined up but he sheds a tackle and bursts in for six. I hand my kid to my wife.
It’s my ball. I need a score. I look for Ward. Nice yardage. I look for the TE. I look for Carnes. Then I find Sides over the top for six. I now have 21 points and the rest of the fourth quarter to make up 14 points.
I swarm. I force a punt. I hit the kicker. Personal foul.
I get to third down and 12. They play action and throw it over the top. Six. I am devastated.
I throw a few deep ones. I find Carnes on all-go routes. You know, 4-verts. I am back within a couple of scores but this is over. I try the onside. I’m called for illegal touching.
Under three minutes to go. They are running it. I bet it all on stopping the run. I surround the carrier into a two-yard loss. I call timeout. I run it again. Saw blitz. Cover 1. I tackle him … fumble! Wesloski to the house!
2:16 left! I just need another stop-and-score!
Same play. Same stop. Same play. They throw a swing to the running back. We swarm. Third and 10. I call a cover six zone. They line up and throw — interception! Nelson! We are in business!
I line up and throw —- a pick six. I saw it. I forgot the route is a stop route not a dig. I throw my fourth interception of the game. I get the kick offf and force another throw down the middle as time expires. Fifth interception. I am beaten again.
Fake coach quote
That’s just a tough, tough loss. I feel for my guys. They gave it everything and we came up short. We dug ourselves a huge hole early and we did not give up but we just didn’t have anything left there at the end. We needed to be perfect at the end and we were just not.
My personal excuse is that I had a long weekend and tried to play some video games in the middle of the night while distracted with blogging. Never a good idea. I can’t believe I went down so quickly. I got to stop angrily going for it on fourth down.
