New Orleans, LA - Yulman Stadium (30,000)
Tulane is ranked in the top 25 of both polls: 23 in the AP and 24 in the Coaches. They began the preseason ranked as well. Head coach Willie Fritz is a good coach who has won everywhere since Blinn college in 1993. You might remember him from his time at Sam Houston State from 2010-2013 before joining Georgia Southern for a couple of years. He’s been at Tulane for 8 seasons and is the fifth active D-1 winningest head coach with 202 (Nick Saban at 286). The guy is out here doing some winning, y’all.
His Green Wave are 17-3 in their last 20 and 5-1 to start this season. They started last year with the same record, making it the first time they’ve done at least 5-1 since 1973-74. North Texas is taking on this squad in the midst of a golden era, is what I am getting at.
Thus far Tulane has beat South ’Bama, Nicholls, UAB at home, Southern Miss, and Memphis on the road (last week), and lost only to Ole Miss at home on Sept 9th.
For The Mean Green, a win last week over Temple was the first AAC win for Eric Morris and the program. This week represents a real test and and opportunity. After all, what better way to kickstart a program renovation than by taking out the defending Cotton Bowl champions as a 20-point underdog?
