TULSA, OK — Mean Green Nation was on the road this time. We always aim to make at least one game — either home or away — since we moved away from the Metroplex in 2011. Last year, we had a good time in Memphis. This year, we are in Tulsa. It was a modified trip without the entire family. I brought my eldest and youngest and left the middle kid to her dance recital. I didn’t get to live tweet the game or anything like that as I took in this event not from the press box, but from the stands.
Before our impressions of the game, let us discuss a bit of the experience. Tulsa’s game day is disarmingly friendly. We started our trip at 6am, and but for a couple of stops for food and gas, we drove straight to Tulsa. We got to the campus and asked for the parking spots. We were immediately directed to the free lots. No one wanted to take our money. We parked quickly. The shuttle took us to the game. Everyone was super friendly. They loved MGN’s kids. They are super cute, for sure, and I am saying that as the most biased possible person of course. We got into the stadium area quickly and easily. There were three people who jumped at the chance to welcome us, and also to ask if we needed any accommodation whatsoever. There was a mini-football field with a giant screen showing the game. Smart. There were food trucks and our favorite — an ice-cream/candy truck. My son immediately identified the batman ice-cream. I got an icee. My daughter got the same. We came back for a lollipop later — this changed the game and I will tell you how later in this piece— and there were good times all around. You can wander “in” and “out” of the stadium as there really aren’t any gates or anything. When your ticket is scanned it is for the stadium “area” so you can walk around it and sort of enjoy the vibe. I dig it. I’m sure it doesn’t quite work if it is completely filled with 30K, but the 12K or so that was there? Not bad.
Again, everyone was super friendly. We got Tulsa gloves, and even some hurricane flags. I didn’t want the hurricane flags but like, my kids were begging for it man. The t-short toss was really a t-shirt gatling gun on automatic. My kid, who has been unlucky in the last year when it comes to t-shirt tosses, got a shirt. It is an xtra large and it won’t fit her, but she was super hyped to tell her sister and her mom about it.
I have been to Tulsa before so I don’t plan on doing too much tomorrow. I can tell you that it is a little more interesting than you probably give it credit for. Maybe don’t make a plan for it, but stop a little longer on the way to somewhere else.
