Some things we thought were interesting:
“if you get sacked, I think there’s less than a 7% chance you score a touchdown on that drive” — On the podcast this week (episode 242) we said that we want more sacks from our defense. My rough target is 30+ sacks on the year. Also, allow fewer than 30ppg in the league. Aldo’s mantra: “Let’s just be average”
I cannot wait to hear Stone Earle’s HSOs about fan support at ACU: ACU has a new QB.
We are still in the era of 7th year starters.
The depth chart for LAMAR
Some observations thereof:
NT listing a 4-3/4-2-5 look. Typically Cassity’s depth charts listed 12 guys and we have the same here.
My way-too-early prediction (from December 2024) for comparison:
EDGE - Hayes | also a hybrid spot. Bandit/Jack
N - Outland | Vailea | Bronson
T - Vailea | Bronson
E - Charles/New Guy that’s 260ish | Smith | TransferLB - Chavez Brown | Burrell | Wesloski
LB - Trey Fields | Whitter
CB - Fisher | Canada
CB - Armstead | Nelson | StarlingFS - Jackson | Allen, Jr
SS - Young | Gant | Smith.
Overall not too terrible. Chavez Brown is at USFThat link above discusses a lot of defensive stuff that basically translates. We won’t really know what this defense is going to be until we play someone good.
The early days assessment is that this guy knows what he’s doing and prepares well. Now, everyone who has a coaching job can give a talk and impress you on the whiteboard. Actually getting your players to execute is the real challenge. Can they adjust? Can they deal with challenges on the fly? That’s the real coaching job. Sam Houston flew around and played fast football while doing some very simplistic things. They prepared, executed the game plan, and forced turnovers. In the bowl game they gave up some yards and some scores, but they grabbed three interceptions. They had 16 on the year. AAC champ Army had 18. Last year’s AAC champ Tulane had 17.
They got sacks, they got TFLs, they got turnovers. NT was not near the top of any of those metrics compared to the rest of the league. We just need some of that to translate.
